What is a Custom Foot Orthotic?

An orthotic is a device that fits into your shoe that can help you to accomplish several things. It can make sure that your foot moves the right way through the walking or running stages. It will ensure the right contact at the right moment for the heel, the toes and help to support the arch of the foot. In some cases, the orthotic acts like a steering wheel, helping your foot to function correctly and preventing pain. It can also be used to provide foot support so that the foot is properly aligned and well balanced in its movements.

A true custom foot orthotic is designed by a podiatrist or a foot doctor such as a pedorthist and is something that is specially designed for your own foot. It is not an orthotic that is purchased in a store because it must be specially designed to correct problems that you are having with your own feet. Custom foot orthotics are not cookie cutter solutions that are designed to be sold in stores.

Why Do You Need a Custom Foot Orthotic?

Just walking can put up about one and one half times the weight of your body and focus it on your foot. If you're a runner, you're getting at least three times that weight on the foot. Your foot is a very complicated part of your body. When it is working correctly and everything is in order, it offers you a cushion for the body weight and will balance you very well. The issue arises when the foot has taken too much abuse or work--as it were--and is not doing the job that it needs to do.

Not everyone requires a foot orthotic. In many cases, the foot will do what it was meant to do and it will do it correctly. That is unfortunately not the case for everyone. In some cases, the foot can give you pain when you do certain activities.

It's not normal to experience foot pain. If you do have it, it means that there is a problem of some type that should not be ignored or neglected. The foot pain that you are experiencing can lead to poor posture and to problems with other parts of the body as well. If your feet hurt, your stance will be incorrect and it can often cause problems with the hips, the back and even your knees. Some types of foot pain are from over use, such as running and things that impact the feet to a great extent.

Other types of foot pain may come from actual damage to the feet or to some kind of muscle or bone problems that must be corrected. In many cases, when the pain is from overuse of the feet, or from poor stance or incorrect functioning, the pain can be remedied or even corrected by the use of custom foot orthotics which are inserted into the shoe and help to alleviate the problems that you are experiencing.
